Reasons for Apathy & Potential SolutionsMany teachers have students who they regard as “not caring” because they appear withdrawn from the learning environment.. Students may not participate in class discussions, work productively in peer groups, or complete homework. While students may appear apathetic at very young ages, more often this behavior begins to present itself in the intermediate and middle level grades.

Our research shows that common reasons for withdrawal fall within at least one of the following five categories, and that sometimes the reason for apathy is due to more than one of these factors.
